(Stacker) - While college enrollment remained below pre-pandemic levels, fall2022 freshman enrollment rebounded by nearly 100,000 students from the previous year, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.As enrollment levels begin to stabilize and more students pursue a college degree, Stacker compiled a list of the best colleges in America using Niche's 2023 rankings.Niche ranks colleges using various factors, including academics, admissions, financial, and student life. (Stacker) - American life expectancy dropped in 2021 for the second year in a row and represents the largest two-year decline since 1921-1923. The average life span across the entire population is 76.1 years—the lowest since 1996. Life expectancy can be affected by numerous factors, from genetics to air quality to economic opportunities.Stacker used data from the 2023 County Health Rankings to determine the 25 states where people live the longest. The 2023 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2018-2020 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2021 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2023 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively. A Colorado police officer who put a handcuffed woman in a parked police vehicle that was hit by a freight train has been found guilty of reckless endangerment and assault. Jordan Steinke was acquitted of the third charge of criminal attempt to commit manslaughter.Steinke was the first of two officers to go to trial over the Sept. 16, 2022, crash that left Yareni Rios-Gonzalez seriously injured.Steinke testified that she did not know that the patrol car of another officer she was helping was parked on the tracks even though they can be seen on her body camera footage along with two railroad crossing signs. Police are looking for two suspects who shot and killed a community volunteer as he was leaving an anti-gang violence event in Wilmington Thursday night.The shooting was reported around 10:15 p.m. near Bay View Avenue and West D Street. The victim, identified as Jose Refugio Quezada, 46, was leaving the Summer Night Lights event at the Wilmington Recreation Center when he was approached and shot, officials said.Jose Refugio Quezada (Michael Herrera)“Our victim, who was a cook here, just exited and was here on the street when he was approached by unknown suspects who fired rounds at him,” said Los Angeles Police Department Captain Keith Green.Witnesses called authorities, who arrived to find Quezada on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A brush fire reported Thursday near Temecula has exploded and burned almost 900 acres as of Friday afternoon.The Bonny Fire was first reported around 2:45 p.m. Thursday near the 44000 block of Bonny Lane in Aguanga, a city about 20 miles east of Temecula. The blaze initially burned about five acres in medium fuel, but began growing at a rapid rate of speed, the Riverside County Fire Department stated on its Facebook page. The fire had spread to 500 acres with 10 percent containment as of Friday morning, according to the Fire Department.Around 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon, a tweet from CalFire reported that the fire continued to spread rapidly, with 877 acres burned and only five percent of the blaze being contained."The evacuation area includes north of the San Diego County border, West of Anza Borrego State Park, south of Bowers, Bailey and Ramsey and east of Bonny," Riverside FD said on Twitter. 19-Year-Old Cyclist Fatally Struck by Dump-Truck in Bicycle Collision near Market StreetMEAD, WA (July 28, 2023) – Thursday afternoon, Kenneth Brandenburg was killed in a bicycle accident on State Route 206.The incident occurred around 12:10 p.m., near Market Street on July 20th.According to reports, Brandenburg was riding a bicycle east on SR 206 while the driver of a dump-truck was heading south in a private parking lot.The cyclist then struck the dump-truck on its passenger side as it entered the highway from the private driveway. Upon impact, the driver of the dump-truck fled the scene but returned later that day.Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics later pronounced 19-year-old Brandenburg, of Davenport Washington dead. Investigators say he graduated from Davenport High School a month prior to the incident.Emergency crews closed off the surrounding area for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties.
