Published Sat, 23 Nov 2024 09:30:23 GMT
Gov. Maura Healey is spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars trying to get people to move from Florida to Massachusetts. Why?Give it up, Maura. It ain’t happening. I know that when it comes to squandering public funds, the words “due diligence” are unknown on Beacon Hill. But perhaps someone should check out the “domestic migration” numbers from the Census Bureau.Between 2019 and 2022, 853,720 Americans moved from other states to Florida. In the same period, 165,981 Americans fled Massachusetts. That was the fifth-highest total among the 50 states. It’s quite an accomplishment, considering that the Bay State is only the 16th most populated state. In other words, when it comes to population flight, Massachusetts is fighting way above its weight class. And can we all agree that the 166,000 number is probably much less than reality, and it’s only going to get worse?Who in their right minds would ever move out of a state like Florida with a temperate climate, laissez-faire social...Homer-prone Tyler Wells yields 5 early runs and Orioles commit 4 errors in second straight loss to Dodgers, 10-3

Tyler Wells’ home run problem wasn’t actually one until Tuesday night.Wells emerged in the first half of the season as the Orioles’ best starting pitcher and the majors’ best starting pitcher at limiting base runners. He achieved those statuses despite allowing an exorbitant number of home runs — 21 in 17 starts. But 15 of those 21 long balls were solo shots. The other six were two-run blasts. And they rarely came back to bite Wells, who ended the first half with a sparkling 3.18 ERA and MLB-best 0.927 WHIP.His home run bill came due Tuesday.Wells allowed only one big fly against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camden Yards, but it was of the variety he impressively — and somewhat luckily — avoided in the first half. Jason Heyward lined a three-run home run to straightaway center field to jump-start the Dodgers’ five-run second inning that led to a 10-3 Orioles loss. The three runs Wells surrendered on Heyward’s homer were more than he ...Five Patriots breakout candidates to watch for 2023 season

The Patriots’ 2023 roster doesn’t look drastically different than what New England put on the field last season, but even beyond promising offensive coaching changes, there’s reason to believe the team could put out a better product this year. One potential cause for optimism is the expected growth of young players on the roster.Let’s dive into five potential breakout candidates on New England’s roster.RB Pierre StrongStrong, a 2022 fourth-round pick out of South Dakota State, barely touched the ball last season despite playing in 15 games. He finished his rookie campaign with 10 carries for an even 100 yards with one rushing touchdown and seven catches on seven targets for 42 yards. Now, veteran running back Damien Harris is no longer part of the running back room after departing in free agency for the Buffalo Bills, and his prospective replacement, free-agent signee James Robinson, was cut during spring practices. The Patriots have been kicking the tires on running back depth, accord...North Korea stays silent on its apparent detention of a US soldier who bolted across the border

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Wednesday was silent about the highly unusual entry of an American soldier across the Koreas’ heavily fortified border as some observers say North Korea is unlikely to repatriate him anytime soon amid heightened animosities between the former wartime foes.A day after the soldier bolted into North Korea during a tour in the border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday, there was no word on the fate of Private 2nd Class Travis King, the first known American detained in the North in nearly five years. Earlier Wednesday, North Korea test-fired two ballistic missiles into the sea in an apparent protest at the deployment of a U.S. nuclear-armed submarine in South Korea the previous day.“It’s likely that North Korea will use the soldier for propaganda purposes in the short term and then as a bargaining chip in the mid- to long term,” said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in South Korea.King, 23, was a cavalry scout w...UK homeowners get some respite as UK inflation falls by more than anticipated to 15-month low
Published Sat, 23 Nov 2024 09:30:23 GMT
LONDON (AP) — Inflation in the U.K. has fallen by more than anticipated to a 15-month low, official figures showed Wednesday, a development that may ease the pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates sharply over the coming months to the potential relief of struggling households. The Office for National Statistics said that inflation, as measured by the consumer prices index, fell to 7.9% in the year to June from 8.7% the previous month. Most economists had expected a more modest decline to 8.2%.The statistics agency said the falling of fuel prices was the biggest driver behind the drop, while food price inflation also pared back, though remained historically high. Despite the decline, inflation is still running far higher than the Bank of England’s target rate of 2%. As a result, the central bank is expected to raise its main interest rate further at its upcoming meeting in early August. However, analysts said the bigger-than-expected fall may mean it only raises...Emhoff will become the highest-profile US official to visit Samoa as US makes a Pacific islands push

WASHINGTON (AP) — Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, next week will become the highest-profile U.S. official to visit Samoa, as the Biden administration steps up its outreach to Pacific island nations.Emhoff will meet with government officials, community leaders and female entrepreneurs during his July 23-24 visit to Samoa’s capital, Apia. His communications director, Liza Acevedo, said he will be the first White House principal to visit the country. His visit comes as the U.S. is aiming to deepen diplomatic and economic ties to Samoa and other countries in the region. The renewed focus on the Pacific islands is part of a yearslong strategic shift in U.S. focus toward the area. It is meant in part to counter China’s efforts to significantly expand its military, economic and diplomatic influence across the Pacific.Emhoff will visit Samoa after he leads the official U.S. delegation to the opening of the Women’s World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday proposed new guidelines for corporate mergers, took steps to disclose the junk fees charged by landlords and launched a crackdown on price-gouging in the food industry. The announcements will be discussed as part of President Joe Biden’s scheduled meeting with the White House Competition Council, a group of officials established under a 2021 executive order. The council has focused on creating more transparency for consumers and finding ways to limit the concentration of industries in ways that the Biden administration says lead to higher prices and hurt the ability of start-ups and small businesses to grow. Republican lawmakers and some business group critics counter that the Democratic president’s effort will lead to greater regulatory costs that leave the economy worse off.The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are proposing revised guidelines for how they evaluate mergers. Their goal is to pro...China prepares for naval drills with Russia in sign of continuing support amid Ukraine conflict

China said Wednesday it has dispatched navy ships in preparation for joint exercises with Russia’s sea forces, in a sign of Beijing’s continuing support for Moscow’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine. The move comes despite the growing economic and humanitarian repercussions of the bloody 16 month-old air, sea and ground assault. China claims to be neutral in the conflict, but has accused the U.S. and its allies of provoking Russia and has maintained robust economic, diplomatic and trade ties with Moscow. The exercise involves more than 10 ships and 30-plus aircraft, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency. The ministry and Xinhua gave no details, but the exercises are believed to be set for parts of the Sea of Japan in coming days. China has reliably backed Russia in opposing U.S. condemnation of the Ukraine invasion in international forums, but says it won’t provide arms to either side in the war. The Defense Ministry said in a news release Wednesday that Chinese ships had lin...Latest news
