Candidates in the second GOP debate attack each other and Trump — even though he's absent

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:21:18 GMT

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Donald Trump's rivals were quick to lay into him during the second presidential debate on Wednesday, ripping the former president for skipping the event as they sought to blunt the momentum that has seen him build a commanding early lead in the Republican primary. “He should be on this stage tonight,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who was at center stage despite recent struggles to emerge as the field’s top Trump alternative. “He owes it to you to defend his record where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt. That set the stage for the inflation we have now.”Seven GOP candidates squared off at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California for an event hosted by Fox Business Network. Trump was in Michigan, delivering a prime-time speech that continued through the start of the debate, attempting to capitalize on the Auto Workers Union strike and trying to appeal to rank-and-file union members in a key state that could help decide the general election...

Kiszla: Jamal Murray, strawberry Starburst and why the Nuggets don’t care if the Bucks traded for Damian Lillard

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:21:18 GMT

They’re all out to get the Juggernuggets. But anyone who thinks the defending champs are worried about Damian Lillard joining the Bucks or the Suns acquiring Bradley Beal has never seen Jamal Murray devour a Starburst. While they’re assembling super teams in Milwaukee and Phoenix to stop the Nuggets from repeating, I say a bigger challenge will only make the chip on Murray’s shoulder grow larger. Here’s the best reason I can give you to believe Denver can win back-to-back championships: This season is the chance for Murray to be truly recognized as the All-NBA player he has audaciously strived to become. While we all know Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is the best basketball player on the planet, it’s Murray who instills Denver with its defiant, mess-around-and-find-out edge that every champ needs.I call it the Starburst Effect. My favorite moment from the NBA Finals, when the Heat was as good as beat, was on the eve of Game 3 in Miami, with the best-of-seven series tied at one victo...

NEW YORK (AP) — No matter the field conditions, the New York Mets have dampened Miami’s playoff chances all season.Pete Alonso was 4 for 4 with a homer, Francisco Lindor also went deep and drove in four runs, and the Mets pounded the Marlins 11-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.Braxton Garrett (9-7) was tagged early in a costly defeat for the Marlins, who began the day a half-game behind the Cubs for the final National League wild card. Chicago played later at NL East champion Atlanta. The game was a makeup after the series opener was postponed Tuesday night because of unplayable field conditions. The infield at Citi Field wasn’t covered with a tarp for at least some portion of last weekend, when rain from Tropical Storm Ophelia began pelting New York City for four straight days. The tarp was on the field Tuesday, but when showers finally subsided in the late afternoon and the tarp was removed, the messy field was too soggy to play. That forced a doubleheader Wedn...
